Description Volunteer military officer during the Civil War, organizer of the U.S. Army Tenth Cavalry in 1866, commander of various Western army posts and active in opening the Western frontier until retirement in 1890. Grierson’s papers consist of correspondence (including over a hundred letters to his wife, Alice Kirk Grierson), documents such as orders, reports and maps and other military material, as well as personal miscellany relating to his service in the Western Territories. Microfilm copy available in the Newberry Library.

User-Contributed Transcription Fort Gibson C.N.May 20th 1872My Dear AliceSince writing to you this morning I have received a Telegram from Gen Angus informing me that I have been assigned to the Command of the District of the Indian Territory, with Headquarters at this point and that I have authority to remain my Reg't'l Headquarters.  Therefore,upon receipt of this you can commence packing up.  I will start for Fort Sill on the 22nd inst. and expect to be there by or before the end of the month. Hastily Affectionateely B.H. Grierson  No letter from you - Hope to hear from you before starting
