Description Volunteer military officer during the Civil War, organizer of the U.S. Army Tenth Cavalry in 1866, commander of various Western army posts and active in opening the Western frontier until retirement in 1890. Grierson’s papers consist of correspondence (including over a hundred letters to his wife, Alice Kirk Grierson), documents such as orders, reports and maps and other military material, as well as personal miscellany relating to his service in the Western Territories. Microfilm copy available in the Newberry Library.

User-Contributed Transcription Fort Sill I.T.Feb 25th 1870Dear John,    Yours of the 24th ultimo duly received. also since then two Memphis papers the last dated Feb 2nd , o - and the former containing a sketch of the doings of the famous McComb.  I was fearful that the production of that lengthy communication sent me might strike in on him & prove injurous such efforts even sustained by whiskey was beyond his power of endurance and he the great McComb has gone up a spirit or in other words to the [sevil]    After thinking the matter over I do not think I would
