I should dislike to terribly. Writeme what you're doing about it. And howMrs. Juda Taft came to Emily's today, I expect Jana isthere helping Danford. Now I'm going to whisper something but you mustn't whisper itto any one, even with pen and ink. No oneknows it but me yet. Hark! then, now Chandlerand Rhoda are engaged. That's all I must tellyou now. Don't tell. O! how shocking fastI've written! it will take your four pair of eyesto read it I guess. But I've so much to say, andmy pen won't talk fast enough. I was hindered about an hour, too, by a music teacherthat called here. He played beautifully onyour Melodeon, and I wanted to hear him. Ourtea is ready, good-bye a little while.O! Abby if you had only been here justnow. I've just been out to ride on the lumberwagon. After tea Chandler invited me to ride downand see the new house and then we rode over toMr Pierce's. Chandler went to buy a great-iron kettle.Some masons are coming tomorrow to pet two kettles andbuild a chimney and were in the backroom. They've been plastering James house to-day. O! I don't like to say good bye yet but Imust I haven't written half I wanted to. But Goodnight. Affectionately Mary[written along the left-hand side of the page]If I was in La Porte tonight with you Abby - I'm 'fraid I should talk faster thanI did that night Mr. Kendall asked you if my tongue was mighty. Where is Mr.Kendall, at home this evening? I wish I might just look at him. Givemy love to him. Tell him never to forget his sister Mary.
