User-Contributed Transcription than I -- that it seemed strange and presumptuous of me to write you. Still, the thought of his loss has stayed with me, and I have thought of your kindness in writing to me when my newspaper criticism appeared in the N. Y. Standard last year. And the more I thought about it, the more I believed that I must write you, even if it would be, as it is now, seemingly late.
I remember Mr. Hecht's strange ambiguity: that lightness and hoarseness combined, the mask of gaiety combined with something inside that understand tragedy. And his love for you and Jenny - a kind of pride that illumined him. I do miss him in my own way-- and I ask you to accept this belated token of my regard, and sympathy. With sincere affection,
