Summary Contemporary copy of Jesuit chaplain Paul Du Ru's diary (Feb. 1-May 8, 1700) kept during Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's second trip from Biloxi Bay up the Mississippi to the village of the Taensa, and return. Du ru describes the expedition's vessels; the climate, vegetation, and wildlife of the region; religious observations and ceremonies; the construction of Fort Mississippi; visits to the villages of the Bayagoula, Houma, Natchez, Taensa, and Acolapissa Indians; the establishment of missions among the Indians; and relations with the Spanish at Pensacola. French explorers and missionaries mentioned include Antoine Le Moyne, Sieur de Chateauguay; Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville; Pierre du Gué; Pierre Charles Le Sueur; Henry de Tonty; Joseph de Limoges; and Francois Jolliet de Montigny.

Biographical/Historical Note Jesuit chaplain on Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's second exploratory expedition to Louisiana and the Mississippi River. Born in Vernon, France, in 1666, Du Ru entered the Jesuit order at age twenty. He was selected for the Louisiana mission in 1699 and remained in America after d'Iberville's return to France. Before being recalled to France in 1702, Du Ru served as chaplain at Fort Biloxi and Fort Mobile.
