User-Contributed Transcription Xmas Day1961Dear Jack:  Were you ever taken aback while in a quandary?   That's what happened t me when your book arrived.  Literally, it caught me with my mouth open and my pants down.   Need I say merci beaucoup?  (My French stinks)  It was nice of you to think of me but eventually I would have got to the book even if it came to an extreme case of having to buy it.  The "internecine struggles" you suggest I clear up is a long old story, dead now as King Tut and amounting to archeological data.  After I read "Writers On the Left" I may relent a bit.   Right now I'm reading the fantastic story of "The Black Muslims In America" by C. Eric Lincoln.  Hoping you're not one of them, with repeated thanks for the book you sent & wishing both you heathens a Happy New Year so that Christian-Like you can go from scratch to a well deserved halo (look ma no commas - purr Faulkner)Walt  pencilled in right margin:  CarmonAdded thanks for the Quarterly.
