him.  Some of the anger and defiance I felt got over into the writing, I am afraid.  I think he has a great deal on the ball.   He has the same kind of feeling for poetic violence that you see in the plays of Webster (know him?)  There is something of the Gothic in him too.  His ties with realism are strong, but there is certainly about some of his characters the Webster giant - evil feeling.  If he had the subterranean fury of feeling under control, as Webster has, he could do very interesting things.  I don't think he is temperamentally fitted to write books exposing a particular district.  His whole treatment is far too intense for good reporting.  But his kind of writing has always fascinated me.

   As a person he gives me inferiority complexes.  And I have a hard enough time with those anyway.
