Dear Jack Conroy: -
I have yours of the 16th and I am sorry that I bothered you with the stories at this time. I surely do understand and I can appreciate just what you are up against. Working against time. I feel as convinced as a mortal can be in this funny old world that I have something in those two stories or else I do not know beans when the bag is open. I somehow feel a deep interest in you and I want to see the ANVIL succeed. If it does not naturally any deficit will necessarily come out of the proceeds of your novel writing. I am also thoroughly convinced unless you get better writers than some of your contributors that it will not make a go. I do hope and trust that you will not take offence at this for I swear by all that is holy that I would never say this if I did not have your interest so deeply at heart.
I do not want you to get the impression that my mouth goes like a machine gun firing out lying words and that I am full of goosedom in those two stories the words are the out-pouring of a troubled soul I am not trying to be swellheaded and I hope you will not set me down as a preeminent goddam fool in setting out to advise you. I know its looks flukey for an amateur to advise a professional but I have always appreciated advice no matter what the source.
Just a lot of wise cracking? Dick
