Title
Biographical sketch of Annie Marion MacLean, Harris-MacLean family papers, March 21, 1905
Date
March 21, 1905
Subject
MacLean Family
,
MacLean, Annie Marion
Description
Annie received her Ph.D. in sociology in 1900, one of the first women to be granted a doctorate at the University of Chicago. By the time this profile appeared in a Canadian newspaper in 1910, she had already published dozens of scholarly articles, primarily examining working conditions--of women in Chicago's department stores, hop pickers in Oregon, and coal miners in Pennsylvania. She also developed an interest in the sociology of philanthropy and wrote about "The Plight of the Rich Man in a Democracy." Her religious upbringing, her experiences in Chicago at the height of the Progressive Era, and her interactions with Harris in-laws surely influenced her perspectives and her professional accomplishments. Tragically, she was stricken with severe rheumatoid arthritis at the height of her remarkable career. While the disease crippled her body, her positive spirit and prodigious talents enabled her to remain a gifted teacher, a courageous scholar, and an adoring aunt until her death in 1934.
