Summary Letters and writings of two William Barlows, possibly father and son. Collection includes two letters of the Reverend William Barlow relating to his wooing of Sally Canfield, a religious poem dedicated to his parishioner Mary Matilda Richards (who later married the younger William Barlow), and a notebook of a sermon apparently delivered several times over a twenty-year period. Also, the draft of an address to be delivered to the American Institute on the subject of the appropriate disposition of the funds given to establish the Smithsonian Institution. Also, eleven letters from William Barlow the younger, to his wife, Matilda Richards Barlow, 1842-1851. Barlow, unemployed at the time of the bulk of the correspondence, apparently had tuberculosis. The content of the letters is mostly about his poor health and his feelings about his uncertain future. Also, an undated cabinet photograph of two unidentified women.
Biographical/Historical Note William Barlow the elder was a minister from southern New York State. The profession of the younger William Barlow, also from New York, is not known, although his letters indicate that though ill, he hoped to find a post in a bank or to go into some trade.

User-Contributed Transcription myself that I was able, and not connect myself with any businesses which would compel me to be out when I should be by a fire ~ and if I shall take any clerkship this winter I should be under the necessity of being exposed half my time to cloudy days or rainy weather.  I could easily have procured and could now procure employment at some moderate ?, which would however, keep my during all weather down on the dock and amoung the shipping, from quite early until after the dews began to fall.  I have not dared to attempt it.  And again (in or out of business) if you were here to nurse and take care of me I should gain twice as fast.  Now Savannah I believe to be a perfectly healthy city, and an excellent place to make money ~ and to commence business now-underlined.  Real estate in three years from now will be 100 per cent higher.  So you see I want these things ~ to have my own wife and children with me ~ And to start some safe, respectable business on my account no matter how small ~ and if any such business is successfully started here, it will most assuredly grow.  The best commerce account that I can think of is to procure some small consignments on commission which would enable me to become acquainted with merchants, the course of trade ?.  And I now begin to feel so smart, that I want to make this experiment this spring ~ And then perhaps be ready to make arrangements, when I return to New York in August and September, for something more permanent.
