Summary The most significant transcontinental journey in U.S. history, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was not only recorded in the journals and observations of the two captains, but also by four other members of the party. Private Joseph Whitehouse maintained during the expedition a journal consisting of extensive field notes bound in a single volume of three parts the extant portion covering the period May 14, 1804 to Nov. 6, 1805 (cf. Newberry manuscript *Ayer MS 978).  Upon returning to St. Louis in the fall of 1806, Whitehouse had prepared by a copyist this new and expanded journal, May 14, 1804 - April 6, 1806, with the intent of having it published. This paraphrased version of the original journal includes a preface and fills in some gaps lacking in the original.
Biographical/Historical Note Joseph Whitehouse was born in Fairfax County, Va. around 1775 and moved with his family to Kentucky in 1784. Whitehouse enlisted in the U.S. army as a private in 1798 for a standard five-year term.  He reenlisted in 1803 and later that year was transferred to the Lewis and Clark expedition.  While on this historic expedition, Whitehouse kept a fairly detailed journal from May 14, 1804 to April 2, 1806.  After the expedition's successful return to St. Louis, Whitehouse was discharged from the army.  He later reenlisted in 1807 serving on the western frontier and in the War of 1812 until 1817 when he deserted.  The remainder of his life is obscure.  Whitehouse died about 1860 and on his deathbed he gave the original manuscript journal (Newberry manuscript * Ayer MS 978) to his Catholic confessor, Canon di Vivaldi.
