User-Contributed Transcription 1856?Cherlin.? Wednesday noonDear Friend. It is now some time since I last wrote to you;it may therefore somewhat surprise you. at receiving this letterafter such long silence.  I received an unexpected visit frombrother John, which was I can aprise? you highly agreeable.  He remained but a short times he was on his way toHardenburgh unclear and exnious to reach his Journey'send.  During his stay, he frequently mentioned your name, asunclear with the story of his visit at Steuben.  Heshowed me likewise Brother's? likeness, which I immediatelyrecognize, and indeed I did wish if he had yours along, especially that one which he saw at your father's house.Your father's likeness, was in his trunk which had gone toCincinnati.  & I did not have the pleasure of seeing it.  I was extremely sorry to learn that Ruth & Mary? are sounwell, but I hope that they will soon recover.  It gaveme much pleasure to learn that Sarah is doing so well.  It is certainly inspiring that she should have recovered so well after, such, long illness.  You have ah great reasonto be thankful to God for his goodness towards her, ingoing her once more good health.  Believe methat I could not hear ah this news from you, without callingto mind, the past.  The past is no more - But - "It haunts me still, though many a year had fledLike some sweet melody"
