User-Contributed Transcription done should teach us to beware. It has reached itsiron hand into almost every family, snatched itsselected victims without number, pressuring them upin its prison, till its agents the miserable traffickersin run have completely fleeced them of all they had,and fitted them for Satan's mark, when it marchesthem off to their long home. More than not some kindlyinfluences brought to bear to counteract the naturaltendencies of intemperance it would soon seepoff the human race from the earth. Its tendency isdestructive to man. Some safeguards to defendus from its effects are as necesary as housesto protect as from cold and storm, as laws toprotect our persons and property from violenceand fraud. It is poor economy to build war shipsto defend our costs, to station garrisons on ourfrontiers, to erect prisons for the confinementof the desperate among us, and to make warmand comfortable houses, and at the sametime admit a more dangerous foe than eithersoldiers, prisons or houses defend us fromto our firesides and most secret trials. We should enlist in the temperanceenterprise for the sake of benefiting others.for the sake of performing that duty which weowe our race The interest we should take init should of course be somewhat in proportionto the vastness of the evil which demanded it.
