Ex Governor Everett of Massachusettsin writing upon this subject a few years againtelling what ardent spirits had done in theU.S. in ten years.1 It has cost the nation a direct expense of $600,000,0002 It has cost an indirect expense of $600,000,0003 It has destroyed 3000 000 lives.4 It has sent 100,000 children to the poor house.5. It has instigated to the commission of 1,500 murders6 It has caused 2000 persons to commit suicide.7 It has made at least 1000 maniacs8 It has burned or otherwise destroyed propertyto the amount at least, of $5,000 000.9 It has made at least 200,000 widows.10 It has made more than 1,000,000 orphan children11 It has endangered the inheritance left tous by our fathers, and fixed afoul blot on thefair fame of America. It was stated by JudgeCranch, on good authority before the Am TemSoc. in 1831 that this evil or the use of ardentspirits which is the same thing cost thisnation a sum more than sufficient toby up all her houses, lands and slaves
