User-Contributed Transcription corner of page torn awayatching and begged me not to selltorn cornery more liquor.  If first I promised thattorn cornerm broke the pledge.  Again she pleadtorn cornerith the most persuasive eloquence that ever fellfrom a womans lips that I would not make her a f - crossed outmurder her husband with rum and sendher a friendless with her fatherless children to the poor.  I told her if I did not sell him liquor otherswould and thrust her from me.  Her little daughtercame and plead with tears that I would save her dearfathers life.  But I wanted his money to supportmy family and bid her be gone.  8 of mycustomers now fill drunkard's graves.  2 signed thetemperance pledge and began to prosper finely.  1 in anunguarded hour when tired and clold [sic] and hungryI persuaded to break the pledge and now - crossed out drinka half glass in soda water for his health and heis not - crossed out with 5 others are poor miserable drunkardswith - crossed out wandering about sleeping in barns and bythe way side.  8 persons have I sent - crossed out caused to be sentto the poor house and 3 to the states prison, and I haveat last come to keep them company.  Go with me to younder gallows.  Listen to the confession of the tremblingculprit, just ready to be launched out into eternity.  Hetoo was the victim of alcohol.  Rum made him enragedat his own beloved wife.  Rum sent him out to thewoodshed for the ax convulsed his arm to deal her adeadly blow.  He never intended harm to his dearestbosom friend. Rum crazed his braine and did the dreadful deed.  But rum escap - crossed out and the rumsellergo escape unpunished he died - crossed out ^ is hung as theirsubstitute a martyr to alcohol.  My heart sickenswhen I look abroad and behold the vast amountof sorrow indolence poverty crime & death occasioned
