Alas-alas what will becomeOh that the heart of every temperance might bemade brave and strong in the temperance warfareOh that we might send home an appeal thatwould thrill through every nerve as though their own livesor the lives of their children were at stake anappeal that would never cease its echos till thetyrant died. Alcohol prepare for the shroud! lethim who will prepare the funeral sermon. Can we longer sleep while he walks amongus. A Thomas Roberts a Baptist Ministera man remarkable for the benevolence of hisheart was once walking along the streets ofLondon, he beheld a little girl walking of about 4 years old walking needlesslyacross the street just at the time a coachan it turned the corner of the street drivingfuriously. The little girl must inevitably havebeen over run. Mr. Roberts saw the dangerand without knowing why the child was heedlessof the jeapordy in which he placed hisown life, rushed to the midst of the streetsnatched up the little child and bore hersafely to the sidewalk just - crossed out ^barely escaping with hisown life. How did he thank God in gratitudewhen he looked into the smiling face of the littlegirl and beheld it was his own daughter. Someone asked him afterwards why he risked hislife in rescuing one whom he supposed to be aperfect. I knew that - crossed out said he that the childslife was as precious in the sight of its parentsas was my own child to me. And that God speedilyrewarded him as he will every generous deed.
