User-Contributed Transcription Smith's Hotel, Saratoga Springs Oct. 29, 1858 Dear Sister Mary, There was no address to your little note but as all the rest was to Sarah I take it that it was meant for me and accordingly answer it. Thank you much for all the cheerful words you write about our dear mother. It is hard for us not to be with her now. Do use all your influence to keep her from being too smart. I do wish just now ma had a little more of her daughter Jennie's laziness for indeed it is of the utmost importance that she should keep still. Do, dear mother, try to imagine you arecrosstextDr. often asks very kindly for you. You have succeeded in some way to make him set a pretty high value on your little self. I do believe he thinks you are equal to Sarah and me put together ie. you are good as Sarah and jolly as I and smart as both of us.
