Thus nature is overchanged, crudities are accumulated in the vessels of the body, and hence the great number who fall early with apoplexies, palsies, insanity, and hopeless stupidity. It is much to be lamented that the fasting of the Old Church are now in our times neglected. In all Roman Catholic countries still, the people fast regularly and are much better in mind & body on that account. And the French as a rule, fast in a measure two days in a week, which with Lent and the common practice of two meals a day, even should they be guilty now and then of excess?, keep them in good health and, better than all, in lively spirits.
