than in the pent up city, whose narrow streets scarcely allow a breath of air so pure as that which here plays with the rich tresses of the village maiden. - On the way from Old Hadly to Sunderland, we observed a great variety in the soil, here, rich dark loam, and near by a spot sandy and of much lighter shade. On either side were men busily engaged in the fields some preparing the ground and others putting in the seed. We thought of those who go out to sow bearing good seed, which beareth much fruit into eternal life, and breathed a desire that such might be multiplied. Some fields looked as if the were already up, and its soft waving green rested the eye, weary in gazing. Hatfield and Whately lay on the other side of the river, at some distance from us, we looked upon them with interest because there lived some of our school-mates now happy, in their homes. A very long line of houses represented Hatfield, and the two spires of Whately cheerfully pointed upwards. Passing through Sunderland, we saw directly before us, Mt. Sugarloaf with its shaggy side.
