I received a very nice letter from Cousin Hattie this morning and also one from Cousin John Butler. Hattie had sent him one that I had written her, and that prompted him to write.I received a letter from Howard today also. He has been working on the Evening Journal, as you know, having begun there on June 18. He had received no pay nor any intimation of what his pay would be, if any, and he seemed to lack courage enough to inquire about it. He writes me that yesterday the 26th Mr. Kiene, his "boss" handed him a check for $13.50 which is his pay up to July 1, and is at
