Summary Guide, ca. 1631, submitted by Ellffryth to the Providence Company, containing instructions for navigation around the coasts and islands of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico; descriptions of the islands off the Mosquito Coast; and a plea that Ellffryth be allowed by the company to continue his investigations of the Nicaragua coastline. The initial instructions for Gulf and Caribbean navigation were copied in a hand other than Ellffryth's, probably for his submission to the Providence Company (chartered Dec., 1630).  The island descriptions and plea, in Ellffryth's hand, were most likely added soon after his grounding in late 1631 or early 1632.
Biographical/Historical Note Adventurer, sea captain, Bermuda and Mosquito Coast colonist. An adventurer in the Caribbean from 1607 to 1621, Daniell Ellffryth obtained the support of Robert Rich, later the Earl of Warwick, for whom he operated the privateer, "Treasurer."  Ellffryth settled on Bermuda in 1621, where with Philip Bell, another Warwick partisan, he laid plans to settle Providence and St. Andrews, islands Ellffryth had discovered off the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua in the Spanish Caribbean (now part of Colombia).  Appointed admiral of the chartered colony of Providence in 1631, Ellffryth soon captured a Spanish frigate for which he was grounded at Providence Island and reprimanded by the Providence Company in 1632.  Ellffryth remained at Providence Island until at least 1638.
