Dearest Katharine:
Your letter written just after the telegrams came last week. I am taking the first quiet hour to write — not that I mean things are stormy here, but there is a deal of talking in close quarters. Your telegram was telephoned to me and I gave my reply verbally to the operator; this explains the quick service. I exagerated a little in saying "saw nothing of earthquake," but the only signs of it that came to my eyes were a fun broken bricks and window panes in front of business blocks that I passed. The Tribune ought to have made it clear that the serious damage was confined to the suburbs.
I certainly felt the quake; it was 6:30 as nearly as I remember, and there was a perceptible tremor repeated several times; the heaviest was about half a minute after it started. The electric lights became dim and finally went out entirely. I got tired of sitting in the
