Title Interview with Bob Newhart, part 2, Mister Kelly's collection, 2017
Date 2017
Subject Chicago Jazz, Clubs, Comedians, Jazz, Music, Nightclubs, Oral histories, Theater
Description Synopsis of interview:
Part 2
When he first played Mister Kellys, he was already fairly well known because of the success of his record. He made $650 a week at Mister Kellys, which he thought was really good. Then, he went on to open for Peggy Lee, where he was making $2000 a week.
He ruminates on the old vs the new Mister Kellys, and how the size of the new place made it a different experience because it was so big. He remembers opening for people like Julie London and Janice Harper at Mister Kellys.
He talks about some of his pre-show rituals like pacing back and forth. He then moves into talking about how he was able to become popular because there was a shift in the comedy world happening from the 'take my wife..please' type of comedy to something a bit more nuanced. That is when people like him, Lenny Bruce Mort Saul, etc. arrived on the scene.
Goes through some of his comedy bits, offers some standard advice to young comics
