Ballentine, documenting their travel overland to the California gold fields and experiences there, 1849-1850. Also photocopies of a few of Sherman's (colonel 88th Illinois Infantry) letters regarding the Civil War and his Chicago business, business and family correspondence of father F.C. Sherman, Family records, and newspaper clippings.

Dear Father & Mother
I avail myself of this opportunity of writing Home by Mr Douglass of Waukegan. He has made about $5000.00 here in about 4 weeks and is going Home Satisfied. As for my Self you need not look for me Home under a year from this time. I have been at work in the mines ever Scince I arrived & have not made but $600.00 clear of my expenses Fortune the Fickle [[Jade?]] has not as yet deigned to Smile upon me or Hank. the rainy Season has set in & I will not be able to do any work until next April. I think Some of going to the Sandwich Islands to Spend the Winter. Board is $5. a day & Lodging $1.50/100 per night. So it will take all I have made to keep me in provisions until I Shall be able to go at work again in the Spring. E. Swift, Esq has proposed to me to go into the Brick working business If we can make anything at it. Keith Spottswood & T.E. Smith have opened a large eating House & are [[coining?]] money If I had made anything this Fall I Should have been able to engage in Some profitable business. Sacremento City has now
