Dear Father & Mother
After a long & laborious trip we arrived in this Land of Promise & Gold on the 12th day of August AD 1849 We have not as yet operated any in the mines but will soon be at it & then I will give you a faithful account of my own operations together with what I have made Hank & myself are both enjoying good health & feel able to undertake almost anything to procure the dust. We are as yet limited in our means so as to go at work as we should like but with a little patience at the rate of one oz per day & our board we shall be able to go into the mines & try our luck. We have found several Chicago men here who crossed the Plains this Summer. There is John E. Smith. Goss. Keith Hale. J.B. Weir. & others whose names I do not know all of them in good health. As for provisions there is plenty of them here and in fact all Sorts of goods at San Francisco cargo after cargo are being sold to pay the charges on them A Hotel is being built here at a cost of $160,000.00 which is rented at $50,000.00 a year The House in the States would cost from $1500.00 to $2000,00 Lumber is from $400,00 to $700,00 per m feet
