Description Correspondence of Francis Trowbridge Sherman of Chicago, and his traveling companion, Henry A. Ballentine, documenting their travel overland to the California gold fields and experiences there, 1849-1850. Also photocopies of a few of Sherman's (colonel 88th Illinois Infantry) letters regarding the Civil War and his Chicago business, business and family correspondence of father F.C. Sherman, Family records, and newspaper clippings.

User-Contributed Transcription From the Plains. The following letter from one of our Chicago "Boys" to which we made allusion yesterday, will be perused with interest:
Fort Childs May 22 1849
Dear Father & Mother
I embrace this opportunity of writing you we are all well & in good spirits we are now 240 miles from St Joseph with about 1400 Emigrant Teams ahead of us & about 7000 behind you will see by this that we are not at the tale end of the Heap we arrived here about 8 oc this morning. This Fort consist of a few Mud Houses with out any palisades The Teams that pass this point are all numbered by the Officers & there has passed in three weeks the number I stated above So far I have enjoyed the trip very much and I beleive all the boys as yet do not regret having started upon this Gold hunting expedition I think we have got the best train that has started upon the plains and I beleive Mr Gooding is well pleased with all of the Boys & his Co
Mr A.B. Kellogg joined us when we were about 50 miles from the old Fort Kearny his eyes are improving rapidly & If they continue to improve as fast for the future as they have done he will soon be rid of the inflamation he has in them Our Train as averaged scince we started abot 20 miles per day we have drove some days as high as 28 miles we have passed every train on the road we have come up with with the exception of mules and we have travelled in company with the U.S. train of mules for 5 days the
