Dear Sister & All at Home
Yours of the 19th has been received together with all the letters written me up to this time with one exception. And that is Father's letter sent by Col Chadbourne, who was unfortunate enough to lose his valise. We have some hope of finding it again. I have received all the books that I sent home for. They will prove of great value to me. All the leisure time that I have is devoted to study and the posting of myself in the duties of my position and a higher grade. The books as you discovered all treat of war and Martial Law. Every officer should know something of the profession which he has adopted so that he may at least have some knowledge of the fundimental principles which governs the prosecution of war. I am pleased to hear that I have numerous friends at home
[opposite page:]
So you may set it down that I am not in high favor at Brigade Hd Qrs. Well I ask no favors from them and they know it. They also understand that I am not to be run over with impunity, and am about as well posted in my duties & rights as they are. In fact I have made them back down two or three times, and they do not like it. I can paddle my own canoe and will come out all right yet. I have sailed in rougher water and come into port safe. I have no news to write therefore my own personal matters fill up the sheet. I cannot truckle and play the courtier it is not in my nature. It looks as if we were going into perminant camp here and probably shall remain for a month or more Where Braggs army is and doing is not fully developed. Ellen is at Murfreesboro and will shortly join me. The Rebs citizens and soldiers are tired of the war and ask for peace. The beginning of the End has come love to all kiss the children. tell Ella Pa will write her a letter. Your Bro Frank.
