Description Correspondence of Francis Trowbridge Sherman of Chicago, and his traveling companion, Henry A. Ballentine, documenting their travel overland to the California gold fields and experiences there, 1849-1850. Also photocopies of a few of Sherman's (colonel 88th Illinois Infantry) letters regarding the Civil War and his Chicago business, business and family correspondence of father F.C. Sherman, Family records, and newspaper clippings.

Dear Sister
I received the Family letter written on Christmas Day containing the wishes of you all for me and Ellen, which thank God I am able to send back to you all at the present time the same wishes for your present and future happiness, and a reunion at no great lapse of time of us all at home in Chicago I received two letters for Ellen from our daughter Ella & it gives me pleasure to note the improvement she is making tell her to keep on altho Pa & Ma are long way off our dear children are not forgotten. William writes me that he has sent me $100# by mail I have not as yet received it when I do I will acknowledge the receipt of the same. Ellen is in Nashville stopping with a Dr Westervelt and is tolerably comfortably situated. She will come to Murfreesboro in a few days and will stop at the house of a Mr Jordan whose Son was a prisioner of War at Camp Butler when the 12th Cav'y was there. He rembered her and me and invited her to go to his Fathers house when she went there. Father says he is going to Washington and if I will get a reccommend from Genl Rosecrans he will try and get me a "Star" in place of my Eagle. I confess I would be glad to mount the "Star" but I have considerable delicacy in asking Genl Rosecrans to do me so great a favor. Tell him to try without the
