Description Correspondence of Francis Trowbridge Sherman of Chicago, and his traveling companion, Henry A. Ballentine, documenting their travel overland to the California gold fields and experiences there, 1849-1850. Also photocopies of a few of Sherman's (colonel 88th Illinois Infantry) letters regarding the Civil War and his Chicago business, business and family correspondence of father F.C. Sherman, Family records, and newspaper clippings.

Having nothing to do & boarding out at that, with our old friend Jas Hyslop, who by the way used to sell Hats & Caps in old 98 Lake st at the moderate sum of $35 pr week, and also having a good opportunity by Mr Warner must plead my excuse for tresspassing on your valuable time long enough to ascertain what is going on in this portion of the hemisphere - Your brother Frank and myself are quartered at the Garrett House in San Francisco kept by Jas Hyslop, to which place we have been driven by adverse winds and high water principally - The town or rather city of Sacramento is completely submerged, nought meets the eye but one vast sheet of water - I have rode in a yawl boat all over the city - here in this splendid Rag city where only one week ago, a lot 30 ft front by 100 ft deep was considered worth the magnificent small sum of $5000 - would you beleive it I would not give a $100 peice for all the lots in the place - The destruction of property was very great in many cases houses were overturned and any quantity of provisions carried off - To give you something of an idea how fast the water rises here, at night when I went to bed and Chas H Getzler was sleeping with me on some Chairs in the middle of the Floor at 10 o'clock at night I stuck
