Summary Letters written by Samuel Eddy Barrett to his wife Alice Barrett while travelling throughout the Far East. Also one letter addressed to Zechariah Eddy from Barrett's father Samuel Barrett regarding the death of Eddy's brother; and letters to Barrett's daughter Adela Barrett pertaining to an inheritence and property. While the purpose of Barrett's visit to the Far East in unclear, the letters to wife Alice from Japan, China, India, and Indonesia are colored with descriptions of architecture and gardens, markets, and luxury goods. Many of the letters were written while at sea and describe fellow travelers and social interactions. 
Biographical/Historical Note Chicago industrialist, head of Barrett Manufacturing Company, and a Major in the Civil War.

We have received with deep sensibility the account of your afflicting misfortune. I cannot express to you how much we feel for your distress from the commencement of your begining in life you have been struggling hard to live in the world. you have been often and again visited with misfortunes and troubles [[&?]] they are the Lot of man here below -- My dear Brother this [[recent?]] misfortune as well as all your others are Not mere Chance -- They are the dispensations of a Wise overruling Providence
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away Blessed be the name of the Lord
My Brother -  I can point to you [[?]] you may find Comfort under every affliction [[?]] Lord and he will be found of you -- his [[?]] sufficient for you Pray unto him [[?]] heart that he will sanctify this dispen[[sation?]] [[?]] Providence to your eternal peace that [[?]] enable you to [[bear?]] it with patience [[and?]] [[?]] Brother the [[?]]
