User-Contributed Transcription We were good friends with Art and Louise and J + J spent many many interesting evenings hearing these exciting tales told in his quite voice, with his many witticisms thrown in. He was a clever Scotchman (who loved his Scotch) & was Mr. Eckstein's right hand man.
John was at the Auditorium at the time with the Chicago Opera Company, when Art was at home between Seasons he went to Chicago almost every day, to Mr. Ecksteins office in the North American Building, very often dropping into the Auditorium for rehearsals. Naturally he knew everyone. One evening he dryly said "she will never sing," meaning Harold MacCormack's, lady friend [[Ganna?]] Walska whom he was pushing down the throats of the Chicago Company. Papers were full of notices how great she was. Art said the conductor was tearing his hair, the tenor in complete collapse (as he watched the rehearsal) the chorus unbelieving! The next mornings papers said the Madam was ill. Art said "I told you so." Exciting days! It was fun to be young.
Gratefully Yours
Mabel Laurie.
