User-Contributed Transcription 12July 13thLeft Elkton for Scottsburg, twenty miles distant, where I arrived at 12 M. The Road from Elkton to this place, passes through prarie Country and keeps in the immediate vicinity of the River. All the open land is claimed and occupied by farmers As you reach within two miles of Scottsburg the Road enters heavy timbered land, which continues to Scottsburg, the head of navigation upon the Umpqua River. The timbered River Bottoms are generally covered with a thick growth of Myrtle, Maple with occasionally Alder, Ash & Willow, Cottonwood. Scottsburg is a dull place, consisting of one Store, Hotel and Black smith shop and nearly twenty empty buildings that are fast going to decay. In 1850 & 51 this place bid fair to be the most flourishing town in Oregon, lots ranged high, buildings could scarcely be put up as fast as they were demanded by the traders who were every day arriving from the diferent [sic] parts of the Country to engage in business. At that time all the trade of Southern Oregon & Northern California bid fair to be shipped to this post. But AD1833 a Road was opened through the Coast Mountains, from the mining country to a point on the Pacific that proved to be very much nearer than to this place, where a town was soon built up, and
