User-Contributed Transcription 19instructions which were posted in a conspicuous place, and had the satisfaction of seeing the Boat got under way, and in a short time I was landed on the opposite side in the suberbs [sic] of the City This Bay & vicinity was settled in 1853, during a great excitement, upon the discovery of extensive Coal beds in the neighborhood and rich placers of Gold on the beach; Empire City is the principal place, was (like thousands of other towns on this coast) built up in a hurry and died out as suddenly, it contains about twenty five houses, and not over five or six that are at present occupied, the remainder fast going to decay, in consequence of the Gold mines proving a failure and the Coal Banks not proving to be a paying institution The Coal mines are still worked to some little extent, but are yielding but little encouragement. Although Coal is abundant, yet its quality and the cost of labor, shipment &c does not justify the proprietors of the "Beds" to drive the business very extensively A large Steam Saw Mill upon the upper border of the town, and another some few miles up the Bay, have been quite extensively engaged in the manufacture of lumber for the past two or three years but at the present time are motionless doing nothing, and apparently not paying a very heavy interest upon the
