User-Contributed Transcription 30Settlements where they safely arrived after undergoing the fatigue & suffering incident to a gauntlet through a hostile Indian Country, About one month after the place was abandoned by the first ten pioneers the proprietors of the place organized a company of seventy men in San Francisco and sent them, well armed and equipped to locate and commence a settlement at that place, and of this number, the writer of this was included We landed at the Roadstead of Port Orford on the 14th of July off from the steamer "Sea Gull" having had a boisterous passage of six days from San Francisco Our numbers seemed to intimidate the Indians, and it was only small parties, like that of the Coquille that were attacked; the object of locating a place at Port Orford, was to open a pack trail from that point to the mining Country in southern Oregon and northern California, and thus connect that extensive mining region with navigation, and furnish the demands of said mining country from this point, And it was in search of a practicable route for the location of said road that the Company were engaged when overpowered by the Indians near the mouth of the Coquille, the people of this place have failed to ever open a
