User-Contributed Transcription 13named Crescent City, from the Crescent shape of its harbor or Roadstead upon which it is built, since the locality of this town, the most of the mining trade has been shipped there, consequently a nearly fatal blow to Scottsburg Scottsburg is named after its proprietor Capt Levi Scott, one of the pioneers of Oregon, who has gained the title of Capt during some of the early Indian warsJuly 13th Took passage down River on board the Steamer "Sattelite", a pretty little Steamer for River or Bay navigation, and able to run at the rate of 15 miles per hour One half mile below the town we passed a Sawmill upon the right bank. At the mouth of a rapid little Mountain stream of about 50 ft in width. And 1 1/2 miles farther passed what is denominated the "lower town", a place of 12 or 15 houses that were hastily put up when times were flourishing, in opposition to Scottsburg proper These buildings are all vacated, and no business done here at all. The "lower town" or "Lower Scottsburg" is the terminus of the River bottoms, and for about five miles farther the River is walled in with perpendicular walls and craggy escarpments of Sand Rock of two or three hundred feet in height cut up into chasms and deep narrow
