User-Contributed Transcription 32of the Coquille Massacre, he afterwards located in Marin County California, and was killed by a shot from a pistol that was supposed to be unloaded in 1858 The trail follows up this Creek in order to get around a high Mountain standing immediately on the south side of the mouth of it and which rises abruptly from the waters edge some 2000 feet in height, This is Called "Humbug Mountain" from the first party being sent out to view a Road from Port Orford to the interior Rogue River valley, who were directed by the Town Proprietor to ascend this Mountain & from its summit they would find a straight and beautiful dividing ridge leading off easterly to the Mining Country of Southern Oregon. The summit was reached (This humble individual being one of that party) and it proved to be a bald Mountain of round Conical form, and almost inaccessable on all sides, the theory of a Road from thence was pronounced a humbug, and hence the name of Humbug Mountain After striking Brush Creek the trail follows up stream crossing it some sixteen or seventeen times, and finally you find yourself near its source on the South side of the Mountain and within about one fourth mile of the beach After passing this Mountain for the most of the way to Rogue River kept
