User-Contributed Transcription 28amount of good farming land, Sixes R. derives its name from a noted Indian Chief who held full sway here at an early time when the Coast was first beginning to attract attention, In 1851, at the first settlement of Port Orford, the name of the Six was given to this Chief by the whites, that word signifying friend in the Jargon language, a language or dialect spoken by nearly all the Indians and whites from the Russian possessions to Mexico, This noted chief appeared to possess unlimited power, and influence over all the surrounding tribes but (like many others of his race) mysteriously disappeared sometime during the winter of 1851 & 1852 After passing Sixes River about � mile, the trail leads up the bluff again to the left, passing over the point known as "Cape Blanco" known to all Geographers & Navigators as the most western point of the United States this point was visible from the Sand hills North of the Coquille from which place it had the appearance of a low point extending out seaward, with a higher elevation at the point covered with green timber, fir & spruce pine Passing the Cape, the trail keeps through barren spruce pine land common to a sandy soil, for about 4
