User-Contributed Transcription 17of the River about one half mile from its mouth. The River at the Bar, at low tide is about one fourth of a mile in width About 200 yds from the beach stands the Light House, a magnificent building erected during the Summer of 1857 The Bar at the mouth of the River is a bad one, and many vessels were lost upon it during the first five or six years of the settlement of this part of the Coast But of late, since the pilots have become better acquainted with the Channel and character of the winds and tide, the people of this place have not had occasion to record the loss of a single Vessel Here upon this Coast and among the Sand hills and along the Rivers and Bays, may be seen the remains of the deserted Ranches of the Umpquas a once numerous Tribe from which the River takes it name From this, my course was South along the beach, which is wholly composed of Sand, with drifting sand hills to your left, which extend from one to two miles back, and the raging billows continually tumbling and surging, to your right By far the best travelling is when the tide is ebbing for the sand above high water mark, is generally of a drifting nature, causing very laborious travelling
