User-Contributed Transcription 31Road to the mining Country referred to, consequently the place has never attained the importance that it would had such a route been found practicable In 1853 & 54 There was some little excitement here occasioned by gold being found in considerable quantities on the beach near by, and that together with a few rich deposits found on Sixes River caused the place to flourish for some little time and it was increased to about thirty buildings. but at the present time there are not over five or six Ocupied [sic] this place is located some forty or fifty feet above the sea, with a thick heavy forest of Fir Hemlock & Cedar back of it, and a narrow beach of sand at the foot of the bluffs in front of it, Altogether it is pleasantly situated, but exposed to all South & south West winds, the harbor is a poor one, only sheltered from the North & East July 17th Started from Port Orford for Rogue River, the trail follows the beach for 1� miles and then bears off to the left over high hills and deep gulches for about five or six miles when you descend by a steep tortuous route to the narrow timbered bottoms of "Brushes Creek" about 1� miles from its mouth, This is a small Creek and derives its name from Gilbert Brush one of my old Comrads [sic] from San Francisco in 1851 and also one of the survivors
