11aside from these rich bottom lands the open prarie country generally extends back to the hills, and forms what is termed "second bench land" which produces excellent grain but not as rich, or as good for garden vegetables as the River bottoms. And still further back are the high "Bald Hills" which furnish to the agricultural community an excellent range for their stock. these hills are in places very much cut up with Caons and timbered gulches, and in many places may be found ledges and high cliffs of rock principally sand rock, which appears to be about the only formations (Geologcally) in this vicinity, although in the gravel beds bordering the rivers, may be found pebbles of volcanic, slate & quartz, that have rolled on together into one common deposit The timber is principally fir, with quite an abundance of white & black Oak growing upon the borders of the praries and upon the ridges. Cedar is found in the Caons, and Laurel and a variety of small shrubbery in the Mountains Game is abundant, such as Deer, Bear Geese, Ducks, Grouse, Pheasants, Pigeons Quails &c, Elk may be found quite plenty, within five or ten miles of the settlements, they confine themselves principally to the Mountains. Beaver and Otter and fish of various kind are found in the Rivers
