User-Contributed Transcription 20large investments necessary to the construction of such buildings The shipping to this place is very limited, although there is a good entrance and a beautiful harbor the bay being about one mile in width. The Country around about is not very mountainous, but very heavily timbered I was obliged to stop here for the night, not being able to reach the next settlement on the Coquille to day July 15 Left Empire City this morning the trail, led off directly from the Bay, into a heavily timbered Country, of Spruce, Hemlock Fir &c, with a thick undergrowth of Salmon Berry brush, which at this time were loaded with berries. The timber, particularly the Spruce, grows to a great height, of perhaps 250 or 300 ft, and from 8 to 10 ft in diameter About four miles from the Bay you enter forest that is composed wholly of dead timber, caused by fires which to all appearance, had raged fearfully at some late period. In this burnt land the trail was much obstructed by fallen timber, amongst which Blackberry Briers grew to such an extent, as to render the travelling almost anything but agreeable. About two and one half miles after you enter the burnt timber, you ascend
