161during my leisure I had forwarded to him many very nice specimens among which was a large Panther Skin; The Dr hearing of my old afflictions very kindly offered his services in my behalf, and invited me to visit him at the Fort which accordingly done and put myself under his care. He had been long in the U.S. Service, had acted in the capacity of surgeon for many years, was through the Mexican war in that Capacity, and had the reputation of being a spendid [sic] surgeon, and my spirits (although for several years drooping) were brightened when he said he thought my wounds might be healed; After a thorough examination he expressed the opinion that there was some foreign substance inside the body and that called to mind the joint of the arrow shaft that people generally believed to have entirely decayed long before this time and to have passed out of the wound with the matter; Like Dr Fiske, Dr Vollum was of the opinion the stick inside the body would not decay but that it was somewhere
