[page designation covered by newspaper clipping]of Lava scattered in every direction, Passing this Creek about 3 m over high land, and we came to the bluffs of "Tyghe Crek' a western tributary of the Des Chutes River, these bluffs are also steep and rocky and raise to the height of about 4 or 500 ft. This Creek is a stream of clear water, fifty feet wide containing fine trout, The bottoms appear to be about one half mile wide, all claimed by farmers the soil is good and produces well, along this creek is a small growth of timber consisting of small cottonwood, alder, willow, a small kind of black birch aspen, rose bush, Gooseberry, and a variety of wild Currants that were ripe and equal to any seen in cultivated gardens; of diferent [sic] colors red, blue & yellow Here the "Sage brush" first appears, a shrub of some two feet high, grows in bunches, and has a little resemblance of sage growing in bunches, also a shrub of some 3 or 4 ft high, very bitter and resembling worm wood, [added in pencil: by Fremont called "Artemisis"] From this to Walla Walla a traveller has to govern himself, in a manner by the watering places to be found on the way, which is only found at intervals of 10 or 15 miles, timber is also left behind after you pass "Barlows Gate" finding non except the small growth along the streams A good quality of bunch grass grows all over the high lands, and wild Rye and wild red top grows on the bottoms, Stopped for the night on Tyghe Creek, Mt Hood looming up in a course about N. 75' W. and distant 30 or 40 milesWed June 20th Started down the Creek on the
