User-Contributed Transcription 71peculiar to Creek bottoms. From Monroe to Corvallis 18 miles it is level, thickly settled, with the spurs of the Coast Range Mts not over four or five miles to the W. of you, and the Long Tom to your right, until you approach Corvallis and then the Willamette approaches until you enter Corvallis which is a Town beautifully situated upon its west bank, containing about 250 buildings and is the County seat of Benton Co As you enter the Town you Cross "Marys river a Sluggish stream of about 20 yds in width, upon a high frame bridge near its mouth, A few miles S.W. stands Marys Peak, prominent in vicinity and a deposit of Snow upon its N.E. sideJune 12th Left Corvallis this morning, by crossing the River on a Ferry Boat; The River is perhaps 150 yds wide, and is the line between Benton and Lewis Cos. From thence to Albany in a N.E. Course of 10 miles, the Country is gently rolling, timbered, and quite thickly settled. About � mile before you reach Albany, you cross the Calipooia Creek a stream of 20 yds wide; As you enter Albany you will observe the Village Cemetery, tastefully arranged, upon the bank of the Willamette a few yards to the left of the road. Albany is a pretty locality, contains about 150 buildings, and is the County Seat of Linn Co. At this place the Country expands into wide level praries, extending from the Willamette to the Eastward for 10 or 12 miles to the Santiam River which flows at the foot of the Cascade Mts and
