74flowing N. Cross the Creek, ascend the bluffs again, and turn more to the E. and you appear at once at the locality known all over Oregon as "Fosters," 120 m from Eugene City Foster has been settled here nearly ever since the first settlement of Oregon, has a good farm well improved, has made himself rich off the poor "Emigrants" who are Annually crossing the Cascade Mts. This place is generally considered the foot of the Mts hence the importance of the place At three miles from Fosters, over hilly and broken country, and overtook a family that were making their way across the Mts. with a few head of Cattle & Horses, and an Ox Wagon, they had camped for the night and the day being somewhat advanced, we camped with them. They were an interesting family group, hovering around a small fire, the day cold and wet, the man was dressed shabbily even for an Oregonian the Woman barefooted, with a Blue [?drilling"] dress and Bonnet her only clothing the youngest child, naked or wrapped in a shawl the second with an Old shirt, the third with a pair of old drawers on, and the fourth and last, the most comical of all, had on a pair of mens pants with legs cut of [sic] to suit his length, all with their faces bedaubed with dirt, ashes, filth &c to such an extent that it would be dificult [sic] to distinguish them from Digger IndiansFriday June 15th A rainy morning, while the others were getting up the Stock, I succeeded in killing a fine white tailed deer, which added considerable to our Stock of provisions, as well as to that of the family, who were well pleased at the prospect of
