User-Contributed Transcription 90is distinctly visible notwithstanding the smoky state of the atmosphere As the afternoon wears away, our thirst becomes almost unendurable, and the more we drink of the alkali water, the more thirsty we become It is repulsive and nauseating, and the alkaline matter has already taken effect upon our lips, which have become parched and sore It was remarkably hot all the afternoon and no protection from the suns scorching rays, at sun down, it became a little cooler, and as the shades of night came on, the wind arose and blew to such an extent that we had [added in pencil: great] dificulty [sic] in keeping [crossed out: possession of] our blankets [added in pencil: from blowing away] Sage brush is the only fuel in the vicinity and it is surprising what a small quantity of wood will aswer [sic] for the necessary cooking of CampersTuesday June 26th Got up this morning with parched and feverish lips, drank heartily of the alkali water, and started at an early hour from these "Well Springs" much more thirsty, than when we arrived here yesterday, our lips actually parched in a manner that made it painful to move them, At 3 miles, in passing through a dry sandy ravine, with a thick growth of Sage brush, and a few scattering Juniper trees, we fell in with plenty of "Jack Ass Rabbits" a large, long eared and long legged Rabbit, some resembling the hare or white rabbit of the northern States, we easily succeeded in killing as many as we wished for two or three days use
