69in abundance, surpassing any before seen in Oregon In this country these berries grow upon low vines, and often are formed under the surface and push the dirt from them as they increase in growth After travelling down the River for 17 miles, through pretty valleys, and fine rolling praries, and some timbered ridges, thickly settled all the way, arrived at the little town of "Springfield" situated on the right bank of the river three miles from Eugene City, Springfield consists of about a dozen buildings and is apparently doing a pretty little business, cross the River at this place on a ferry Boat and in about one hours time enter Eugene City The Country in the Willamette Valley is much pleasanter at this season of the year than at any other, the swales and sloughs upon the praries are dry, grass and other vegetation at its full growth, the praries are covered with the handsomest flowers the world affords of all varieties, of all shape and color. Strawberries are plenty and ripe in the swales and low lands the wild rose grows plentifully and at this time is in full bloom, and every thing seems pleasant.. Stayed in the neighborhood of Eugene [crossed out: for] until the morning of June 11th when the season being so far advanced that I did not deem it safe to make the trip to Walla Walla via the head of Willamette and Des Chutes Rivers, on account of the Indians who at this season of the year are scattered over a much larger scape of country, than during the winter season, consequently much more danger, therefore I set out from the residence of my acquaintan [sic]
