81up a steep Mountain of 1/4 m at an Angle of 45' then bear off to the left around the head of a Ca�on or ravine to the right of us, passing over several hills, and several gulches through which rapid mountain streams were flowing when we come to a very rapid stream of 20 ft wide dashing and foaming over rocks and boulders, through which it was dificult [sic] for stock to pass without injury After arising the hill on the opposite side of this Creek the road descends gradually and you soon leave fir & hemlock land, and find yourself in an open timbered country, with Yellow Pine timber and some small scrub Oak, nearly level, through which you pass for about 4 miles to the next stream of water, where there is a Ranch, and is known as Barlows Gate is about 60 m from Fosters and is the foot of the Cascade Mts on the E. side. Crossing the stream which is 10 ft wide, we travelled 3 m further, over gently rolling land, open, with groves and strips of Yellow pine timber, and good bunch grass and camped on another Creek of same size called 3 m Creek this stream is Clear cold and Rapid, runs E. and abounds in speckled trout, of which we obtained a good mess. The banks of the Creek are about 100 ft high, and in many places formed of walls of Basalt with large masses and boulders of Lava scattered all over the vicinity. From the banks of this Creek you have a fair view of some of he snowy peaks, for which the Cascade Mts are famous Mt Hood bearing W.N.W. Mt Jefferson S.S.W. Mt Adams N.N.W. This last lies N. of the Columbia R. in Washington Territory, and I find the people very ignorant as to whether it is
