User-Contributed Transcription 73three miles and you arrive at Rock Creek. From this the Country was quite hilly and very brushy, my course being a little to the E. of N. for five miles, when I came to a creek of 30 yds in width which I forded at a rocky bar, it was rapid but not deep by consulting my pocket map, I found this to be the "Molelle' R.' a tributary to the Willamette, The country is becoming more thinly settled, as you approach the Northward and near the Road that leads over (crossed out: of] the Cascade Mts. From "Molelle" it is about two miles, to the next stream of some 30 feet in width upon which is a grist mill, and some little settlement around it. crossing this creek you ascend a mountain by a gradual ascent of about 3/4 of mile to its summit, from which the road bears off N. upon a high ridge of open timber and fern land, with now and then an occupied claim, and upon this ridge I stopped for the night having travelled 35 miles; the afternoon was quite rainy:Thursday June 14th Travelled six miles over high land, and arrived at a small creek called "Clear Creek" upon which is a saw mill and several buildings around about it, here I fell in with a man from Marion Co. on his way to the "Umatilla" (in the Walla Walla County). with a Band of Cattle, and not having the necessary assistance required to drive Stock, I engaged with him to assist him to his journeys end, and after driving three miles we came to the Bluffs of "Clacamas" River, and could overlook its valley which appeared to be about one mile wide and heavily timbered, descended down into this valley, which appeared to be 1/4 mile deep, to the River, which is 100 yds wide & brisk Current. forded the River at a pretty good ford, and landed near a Saw Mill, built upon a small creek or slough. from this ascend the high land again, and at 1 m descend a steep of 1/4 m to a Creek 20 yds in width
