91 After travelling about 8 m over a country dry, sandy and dusty, and a little on the hilly order you will notice to your left, about 30 yds from the road the grave of "A, Haptonsta, died Sept 1st 1853 aged 67" After passing this a short distance we noticed a fire raging on the prarie behind us, The wind was blowing furiously, the Clouds of dust that filled the air, had prevented us from noticing the smoke, until the fire was near us, as our course was E. and the fire coming from the W. and running before the wind, it did not cross the road, but swept along on the right hand side, burning the grass in a strip of about 100 yds in width, sweeping by us with fearful rapidity, and the fire and smoke in which we had been for some time enveloped, was soon far in advance. After fifteen miles, the ground begins to descend and you can look over the low hills and see the thick growth of timber skirting the "Umatilla River" some 10 m distant, we descend these low hills referred to, down a winding ravine to "Butter Creek" which we found to be about 10 ft wide and only a channel cut in the earth of 6 or 8 feet deep with no water, except in pools, here we camped for the night "Butter Creek" takes its rise in the Blue Mts runs N. Westerly and empties into the Umatilla There are two stories relative to the Origin of its name The first says that during the "Cayuse War" of 1847 some of the Officers came in posession [sic] of a quantity of Butter, and refused to share that luxury with the Volunteers.
